Repositioning Learner Assessment in Higher Education
The Higher Education and Training Awards Council (HETAC) and the Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) 2 Eastern Regional Alliance are organising a one-day symposium entitled 'Respositioning Learner Assessment in Higher Education' on Friday 14 May 2010. The symposium will be held in Chartered Accountants House, Pearse Street, Dublin 2. The programme is available here
In May 2009 following a lengthy period of development and consultation HETAC published an important policy document on the regulation and quality assurance of assessment. The document, entitled Assessment and Standards 2009, addresses the quality assurance of the assessment of learners in higher education and training. This symposium will contribute towards the implementation of this important policy.
This symposium draws together a number of key international experts on assessment in higher education. It will provide a forum to debate concerns and increase understanding of assessment practice. Overall, it will focus on the pragmatic and the possible: emphasising approaches which promote assessment for learning while meeting demands for quality assurance and standards.

The conference is aimed at all those working in higher education with an interest in the practice and research of assessment. It will be of interest to lecturers, researchers, and those with the responsibility for the management and quality assurance of assessment.

Educating for Entrepreneurship
The Higher Education and Training Awards Council (HETAC), in partnership with Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology (IADT) and the Dundalk
The Higher Education and Training Awards Council (HETAC), in partnership with Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology (IADT) and the Dundalk Institute of Technology as lead college in the Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) project, ACE (Accelerating Campus Entrepreneurship ) hosted a one-day conference held in Dublin Castle on Tuesday, 17 February 2009. This conference explored how we can encourage, develop, enable and facilitate entrepreneurship in higher education and training programmes in Ireland.
Conference Objectives
The Conference focussed on the issues and inputs required to embed entrepreneurial ingenuity, innovation and risk-tolerance into learning outcomes and learners across all disciplines and fields of learning in higher education and training programmes.
The conference focussed on:
• Exploring innovative approaches from the industry and the academic perspective towards developing entrepreneurship in higher education and training programmes both in Ireland and abroad
• Highlighting successful models of best practice and exploring the cultural and other challenges in championing and embedding entrepreneurship in different disciplines within higher education and training;
• Providing a platform for key stakeholders to network and access local, regional and national educational providers across Ireland, to maximise the opportunities for national participation.

HETAC Conference on the Recognition of Work Based Learning
HETAC hosted a conference on the recognition of work based learning for HETAC providers, all other higher education institutions and interested stakeholders. HETAC wishes to identify the policy and practical issues that emerge for providers in recognising (and assessing) the prior learning already achieved by groups of people in the workplace.

COUNTRY’S FIRST EVER PhD AWARDED FOLLOWING PUBLIC EXAMINATION OF STUDENT’S VIVA VOCE PRESENTATION

Fr. Seán McDonagh SSC was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by the Higher Education and Training Awards Council (HETAC) following the first ever public examination in these islands of works submitted that included a viva voce presentation.
Speaking at this unique event, which was held on Tuesday, 21 November 2006 at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland headquarters on Dublin’s Kildare St., Séamus Puirséil, Chief Executive of HETAC said, "The remarkable academic and scholarly achievements of Fr Seán McDonagh have been assessed by leading academics who have deemed them to be worthy of formal recognition and I am very pleased that HETAC has conferred this doctorate on him”
